Your Job

Just that completely sinking feeling when you go to a place for a job interview – and this is a job you’ve been hankering after for a good four years now – and you meet a friend there, only to discover that they’ve just been interviewed for the same position.
You joke and say ‘isn’t this funny’ and ‘well, better you than some guy I don’t even know’ but you don’t really mean it because it’s worse. Despite saying you won’t resent them if they get it and you don’t it’s exactly the opposite; this friendship may not last, especially if it’s new or not that strong, if you’re even half as insecure as your humble narrator is.
Then you get to thinking that maybe this is karmic backlash for standing them up at a point in your recent past – an unintentional affront, but an affront nonetheless – and that you probably won’t get the job, not because you’re any worse or they’re any better, but because you upset the natural balance and the universe needs to right itself.
You’d probably feel like a right twonk at that point.
Good thing it’s you and not me, then.
